Video and DVD Seminars

We will soon be introducing seminars looking at Egyptian Dancers from the 1940s to the modern day and the development of dance scenes in the UK, Europe and USA. These sessions are very informal and will include discussion time.

Guest speakers will introduce a fascinating selection of film clips, discussing costuming, dance styles and other interesting points about the dancing and then further discussion with participants to finish off.

Where possible, we will be giving handouts itemising videos/DVDs and stockists.

Focus on Egypt

1940s to 1950s | Hossam Ramzy
The Glamorous Golden Age. Dancers we will look at include: Samia Gamal, Naima Akif, Tahia Carioca but time will be spent on lesser known dancers like Ne’mat Mokhtar, Nabweyya Mustafa, Zeinat Olwi, etc, of that period as well.

1960s to 1970s | Charlotte Desorgher
Dancers of this period include Suheir Zaki, Nagwa Fouad, Fifi Abdou, Hannan, Mona Said and Nelli Also the various national folkloric troupes such as the Reda Troupe and Kawmiyya (National Folkloric Troupe of Egypt).

Late 1970s to 1980s
Sahar Hamdi, Nelli, Shoo Shoo Amin, Mona Said, Halla Yusry, Hanan and early Dina and Lucy. Many of these dancers worked in the same nightclubs but have very differing styles which we will see on video. We start to see the Modern Cairo Style influence as most of these dancers were working with Reda trained dancers especially Raqia Hassan.

1990s to 2000s Charlotte Desorgher
Modern Cairo Style

Dina, Lucy, Randa Kamal, Soraya, Asmahan, Yasmina, Dandesh, Camellia. The era of Modern Cairo Style has dawned! We will look at why this dance differs so much from the past decades. Many of the dancers are Reda trained and have choreographies done for them by Reda trained teachers.

Focus on Other Issues

Folkloric and Fakeloric Styles Shafeek Ibrahim
What’s the difference? We will be concentrating on folkloric styles in Egypt and looking at the Government sponsored troupes and how they are changing the folkloric and oriental style for better or for worse. We will also touch on the folkloric styles of the Levant, Maghrib and the Gulf.

Differences between Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkey and other Oriental dance styles Vashti
A commonly asked question but difficult to describe. Through watching videos of dancers from these different countries and dancers in the US who specialise in some of these styles, we can become better at understanding musical and movement differences between the styles.
