Interesting Information on Arabic Protocol, Traditions, Culture and Ceremonies

Recommended Book              "The Arab of the Desert"

I have recently enjoyed reading a book from my library, which has been very revealing about Arabic protocol, traditions, culture and ceremonies.  Although it is a very old book it is listed in Amazon, but it is very expensive and there is limited availability - so try your local library.

Publishers: George Allen & Unwin
Author: H R P Dickson
Title:  "The Arab of the Desert"

It was written just after the turn of the last century and in some ways it is a little outdated, but the language and eloquence of the author are delightful.  Mainly it is about Kuwait and the Gulf area and it recounts the author's experiences and life as a "blood brother" of a certain tribe.

It is very large and detailed book but one I highly recommend. You will learn so much about the little details that make up the lives of Arabs and will enable you to better relate to them culturally and especially socially; ie

  • when and how to pay a visit,
  • tea and coffee drinking ceremonies,
  • weddings and dancing,
  • what to ask
  • what NOT to ask
  • and how they ensure the departure of their visitors,
  • their honour and tips on how not to inadvertently insult or offend etc.

Read and enjoy.
